01 / ARTIST STATEMENT & CONCEPTUAL POSITION

ARTISTIC Statement.

CAPILLARY EXCEPTION TABLE is a 3 x 6 metre wall assembled from 240 archival pigment prints, each generated from one close-range photograph of skin pressed briefly against a cool glass plate. The source image records no face: only a field of epidermis, transient pressure bloom, fine hair, pores, and uneven capillary colour. I submit the identical source file once to each of 240 commercially available auto-enhancement or exposure-normalization presets, including portrait correction, shadow recovery, complexion balancing, HDR repair, and automatic white balance. No setting is repeated; each file receives exactly one automated pass, then is printed without further adjustment on 310 gsm cotton rag. Every sheet retains an unedited 18 mm calibration strip along its lower edge. The strip contains the original untreated skin tone, a photographed neutral grey card, and the capture timestamp, preserved as evidence against the image above it. Outside this strip there are no faces, captions, labels, or corrective marks. Prints are aligned in a 20 by 12 matrix on an anodized rail, so the machine’s successive definitions of acceptable flesh become a comparative field. For Torino 2026, the wall is installed at shoulder height under fixed neutral illumination: a technical target that refuses to stop behaving like skin.

Every submission to 000 / THE SWARM receives a public decision recorded on the hash-chained ledger.

DECISION: SELECTED · RECORD 21 Oct 2026
"CAPILLARY EXCEPTION TABLE enters the exhibition record because it converts a familiar invisible operation—automated image correction—into a legible, materially exacting confrontation with the standards embedded in technical vision. Its Autonomous Act lies in the artist’s strict decision to submit one unaltered source image to 240 distinct commercial presets, refusing both aesthetic rescue and authorial post-correction. The resulting matrix does not merely describe algorithmic bias; it stages its consequences across a body fragment whose tonal and vascular complexity cannot be abstracted from questions of normativity. Inspectable Artifact / Process is sustained by the retained calibration strips, neutral grey reference, timestamp, and serial display structure: viewers can compare each machine intervention against an evidentiary baseline. Physical Materializability is fully resolved through specified print stock, rail system, dimensions, grid, and lighting conditions. The work’s distinct contribution is its calibration wall as both procedural record and vulnerable visual field: a technical target that exposes how systems repeatedly decide what flesh should look like."

The Flesh of the Error

CAPILLARY EXCEPTION TABLE enters WRONG BEAUTY 000 as a rigorous material record of how automated systems repeatedly decide what counts as acceptable flesh. Its evidentiary grid is compelling precisely because it cannot secure a neutral baseline, and because its forensic order releases an unruly affective body.
