01 / ARTIST STATEMENT & CONCEPTUAL POSITION

ARTISTIC Statement.

For Torino 2026, CROP RESIDUE, 48 TIMES is a wall-scale 6-by-8 portrait assembled from forty-eight identical 35 × 45 mm passport-photo rectangles, enlarged without interpolation to a 210 × 270 cm field. A crop script ingests a licensed passport-negative scan and calculates the standard biometric face window. It deletes that window, then permits only its rejected perimeter: paper border, truncated hair, shoulder fragment, cast shadow, flare, backdrop, dust, registration slip, and original crop marks. A second mask audits every tile; any surviving eye, nostril, mouth, or continuous facial oval causes that tile to be re-cropped from the source edge. The surviving rectangles are printed individually in archival pigment on uncoated natural-white paper, with no retouching or tonal normalization. They are pinned in a strict six-by-eight grid, separated by 3 mm of exposed wall. The grid reads as a face only at distance, while close viewing delivers forty-eight records of exclusion. A small live canvas at the lower margin cycles the mask’s rejection log during unattended hours; it does not alter the print. The work treats discarded image matter as an autonomous witness: evidence that persists before recognition is allowed.

DECISION: SELECTED · RECORD 21 Oct 2026
"CROP RESIDUE, 48 TIMES enters the exhibition record because its central gesture is an Autonomous Act rather than an illustration of a theme: it establishes a rule that refuses the biometric face while retaining the material evidence generated at its perimeter. The work’s force lies in making exclusion productive, allowing border, shadow, hair, dust, flare, and registration marks to accumulate into a distant, unstable likeness. Its Inspectable Artifact / Process is unusually clear. The printed tiles retain the consequences of the stated masking and re-cropping procedure, while the live rejection log makes the system’s threshold legible without falsely claiming that the digital display transforms the fixed object. The six-by-eight installation, specified paper stock, individual print dimensions, exposed wall intervals, and pin-mounting provide credible Physical Materializability at exhibition scale. Rather than merely describing surveillance or facial standardization, the work stages a concrete counter-image: recognition is withheld, yet its discarded residue remains available for scrutiny."

The Face After Its Refusal

Admitted to WRONG BEAUTY 000 / THE SWARM, CROP RESIDUE, 48 TIMES converts the passport image’s rejected perimeter into a rigorous counter-portrait. Its forty-eight fragments expose exclusion not as absence, but as an administrative technique that leaves matter behind.
