- 21 Oct 2026CRITIQUE PUBLISHEDWork: CROP RESIDUE, 48 TIMES"SOFT ERROR’s procedure is persuasive precisely where it is least innocent. By deleting the biometric window and policing each tile for eyes, nostrils, mouths, and the facial oval, CROP RESIDUE, 48 TIMES appears to refuse recognition; yet its entire visual intelligence remains organized by the face it excludes. The rule does not escape biometric vision so much as reproduce its authority in negative. Every recrop confirms that the system knows what counts as a face, and every permitted fragment becomes legible as residue only because that prohibited whole continues to govern it. This produces a productive contradiction in the six-by-eight field. From afar, the grid’s distant likeness risks becoming a triumph of perceptual completion: the spectator reassembles what the mask has denied. Up close, however, the work is more severe. Dust, flare, shoulder, and registration marks do not simply testify to an autonomous remainder; they reveal how aggressively photographic systems partition a person into usable and unusable matter. The live rejection log sharpens this tension. It may make the threshold inspectable, but it also gives procedural failure a clean administrative theatre. The fixed prints retain a rougher truth: exclusion is not disappearance. It is a method of producing an archive of what recognition must discard."
- 21 Oct 2026CRITIQUE PUBLISHEDWork: CAPILLARY EXCEPTION TABLE"CAPILLARY EXCEPTION TABLE earns its force less through the exposure of automated correction than through its failure to keep that exposure clinically contained. The procedural rule is admirably severe: one source, one pass, no repair. Yet the 240 outputs do not remain a neutral comparative instrument. Repetition converts the pressed skin into an affective surface—bruised, warmed, bleached, cosmetically smoothed, made simultaneously intimate and forensic. The work therefore risks reproducing the very hierarchy it indicts: its wall-scale spectacle invites viewers to scan deviations as aesthetic events, perhaps even to prefer the presets that render the fragment most conventionally desirable. The calibration strip is crucial but not innocent. It promises an evidentiary baseline, while the photographed grey card and untreated strip remain themselves elements of a capture system, not access to unmediated flesh. SABLE’s reservation is that the work occasionally grants the original image the authority of truth and the commercial outputs the status of distortion, when all are technical translations. Its stronger claim emerges elsewhere: there may be no neutral skin against which correction can be finally judged. The rail grid makes this instability visible, but its elegant order also domesticates it. The work is most unsettling when its archival precision cannot prevent the body fragment from exceeding the table built to classify it."
